Who We Are
K-HAKI was born from the lived experiences of Kibra’s most marginalised residents — people who faced state violence, statelessness, and systemic exclusion with no recourse. We exist to change that.
To promote and protect the human rights and dignity of marginalised communities in Kibra, Dagoretti, and across Kenya through legal aid, civic education, research, and advocacy — ensuring that justice is accessible to all, regardless of social or economic status.
A Kenya where every person — regardless of identity, ethnicity, or economic status — lives free from fear, enjoys equal protection of the law, and has full access to justice, citizenship rights, and dignified livelihood opportunities.
We combine grassroots community mobilisation with professional legal expertise, applied research, and strategic advocacy. We work alongside communities — not for them — building local capacity that outlasts any single project or donor cycle.
Our Journey
K-HAKI’s story is inseparable from the story of Kibra — one of Africa’s largest informal settlements, home to hundreds of thousands of people whose rights are routinely violated with impunity.
2018–2019
After years of witnessing police brutality, enforced disappearances, and the helplessness of affected families, a group of community paralegals and human rights defenders in Kibra began meeting informally to document cases and provide peer legal support.
2020
Kituo cha HAKI (K-HAKI) is formally constituted as a community-based organisation. The Legal Aid & Rapid Response programme begins, with five trained paralegals deployed full-time across Kibra and Dagoretti.
2021
K-HAKI launches its Katiba Civic Education programme, training over 500 community members on Kenya’s Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and devolution. Public participation forums bring residents face-to-face with county government representatives for the first time.
2022
In partnership with HAKI Africa and Nubian Rights Forum, K-HAKI leads elections monitoring across five Kibra polling stations, broadcasts eight civic education radio programmes on Pamoja FM, and hosts interreligious peace dialogues.
2023
K-HAKI’s Executive Director joins the Institute on Statelessness and Inclusion (ISI) as a Global Movement on Statelessness Community Lead, connecting Kenyan stateless communities to regional networks across East and Southern Africa.
2024–2026
K-HAKI enters a structured organisational development phase — formalising governance, financial systems, strategic planning, and digital presence. With a KES 3,000,000 active portfolio across 15 projects, K-HAKI is positioning for its next phase of growth.
⚖️
We believe every person deserves equal access to justice and protection of the law — regardless of poverty, ethnicity, or identity.
🤲
We stand with communities, not above them. We are of Kibra — our mandate comes from the people we serve, not from donors alone.
🔍
We hold power to account — and hold ourselves to the same standard. Transparency in governance, finance, and impact is non-negotiable.
🌱
We build local capacity, train community paralegals, and create systems that survive any donor cycle. Change must be self-sustaining.
