Pillar 01

Humanity Programmes

Our Humanity pillar provides immediate, life-changing support to people in crisis — families broken by state violence, communities facing food insecurity, and refugees navigating hostile systems without protection.

⚖️ ONGOING

Legal Aid & Rapid Response

24/7 legal assistance to survivors and families affected by police brutality, extrajudicial killings, and enforced disappearances. Five trained paralegals document cases and follow up with IPOA, DCI, and ODPP.

Since 2020: 150+ cases documented · 45 IPOA complaints filed · 3 successful prosecutions

Roots of Wellness: Food Security & Psychosocial Support

A holistic programme integrating climate-smart agriculture with psychosocial first aid for young mothers and youth in Kibra. Sack gardens, nutrition demonstrations, and 10 mother-to-mother support groups.

Target: 500 households · 200 young mothers · 30 youth in green enterprises · Partnership with TARDA

Psychosocial Support for EJE Victims' Families

Culturally appropriate trauma healing and peer counselling for families who have lost loved ones to state violence. Five support groups, 20 trained psychosocial first aiders, and 24 group counselling sessions.

Target: 120 family members · 80% reduction in depression/anxiety symptoms

🌍 PROPOSED 2023–24

Support for South Sudanese Refugees

Peaceful coexistence and capacity building for South Sudanese refugees in Nairobi’s informal settlements. Conflict resolution training, cultural exchange festivals, and vocational skills training for 30 refugee women.

Target: 500 participants · 30 women with income skills · Concept note submitted to KAICIID

Community Reconciliation: Police & Youth

Six community dialogues, joint football tournaments, and clean-up campaigns that rebuilt trust between Kibra youth and local law enforcement. A liaison committee meets quarterly to resolve disputes.

Results: 70% reduction in harassment · 45 youth + 20 police engaged · Replicated in 2 wards

Advocacy Programmes

From civic education radio shows to land rights mobilisation — K-HAKI’s advocacy work changes the relationship between marginalised communities and the institutions that govern them.

Katiba Civic Education

Monthly workshops, paralegal training, and public participation forums on Kenya’s Constitution. 500+ trained since 2021, with paralegals now officially recognised and consulted by local administrators.

2022 Elections Monitoring & Civic Education

Eight Pamoja FM radio programmes, 2,000 ‘Elections Bila Violence’ leaflets, five trained election observers, and interfaith dialogues that kept the peace in Kibra during and after the August 2022 elections.

Mobilising for Land Rights

With the Nubian Rights Forum, K-HAKI is mobilising communities in Kisumu and Nairobi to claim land rights under the Community Land Act 2016. Proposal submitted to OSF-Africa for funding.

Interreligious & Stakeholder Dialogues

Two interreligious forums, one stakeholder ADR meeting, a community peace pledge, and mediation training for 20 religious leaders — establishing a permanent interfaith peace committee in Kibra.

Stakeholder Forums on Enforced Disappearances

Mapped reporting pathways, engaged three police station commanders, and developed a referral pathway document distributed to 200 households. Two missing persons cases were reopened.

Promotion & Protection of Human Rights

EJE Research — Enforced Disappearances

Documented 7 detailed case narratives through FGDs with 15 female family members and 5 KII interviews. Revealed modus operandi and implicated specific police stations — findings cited in HAKI Africa national advocacy.

⚽ Sports for Social Change

Using football as a platform for civic education, peacebuilding, and youth empowerment. A community tournament with 16 teams is combined with legal aid clinics, life skills training, and mentorship — creating transformative experiences for 200+ at-risk youth.
